Commissioned by King Ludwig II in 1869 as a personal refuge from public life, Neuschwanstein was opened to the public seven weeks after his death in 1886. The shy king had built the castle to withdraw from courtly duties — today, roughly 1.4 million visitors a year climb the wooded ridge above Hohenschwangau to see the rooms he never truly lived in.

The castle blends Neo-Romanesque, Neo-Gothic and Neo-Byzantine elements into the most theatrical building of 19th-century historicism. Its silhouette above the Pöllat gorge is the model that Walt Disney later borrowed for the Sleeping Beauty castle at Disneyland.
